Solar Attic Fans — When They Make Sense

PV-powered attic ventilation after air sealing. Avoid depressurizing conditioned space in leaky homes.

Solar attic fans move hot air out when the sun is driving attic temperatures. Used carefully, they can shave peak attic temps and help components like HVAC equipment in vented volumes. Used carelessly on a leaky attic floor, they can pull conditioned air through ceiling gaps — increasing bills and humidity issues.

Our fan policy

We recommend solar fans only after the attic floor is air sealed to a sensible leakage rate and insulation priorities are addressed. If a home still behaves like a sieve at can lights and top plates, a fan can dominate negative pressure and work against you. We would rather sell boring sealing than a shiny fan that hurts comfort.

Pairings

Fans pair best with radiant barriers and good intake ventilation so exhaust paths actually move air. We verify soffit and ridge or gable balance conceptually before adding active exhaust.

Maintenance and noise

Quality mounts and controllers reduce vibration noise. Solar modules need sun exposure — shaded roofs may not produce enough torque on low-sun days. We set expectations on realistic temperature reductions; fans are not a substitute for R-60 and a tight ceiling.

Rebates

Incentive treatment varies year to year. We document measure type and installation photos when programs require proof.

Ask for an honest go/no-go — if your leakage is high, we’ll quote sealing first and revisit fans after numbers improve.
